YOUR HEALTH
Killing the ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts) that invade your brain.
According to renowned brain expert Dr. Daniel Amen (www.amenclinic.com), “…the thoughts that go through your mind, moment by moment, have a significant impact on how your brain works.” Dr. Amen quotes research by Dr. Mark George and colleagues at the National Institutes of Health which demonstrated that happy, hopeful thoughts had an overall calming effect on the brain, while negative thoughts inflamed brain areas often involved with depression and anxiety. According to Dr. Amen, here are four ANT “species” to look out for:

  • Mind reading - Predicting you know that another person is thinking something negative about you. Says Dr. Amen: "A negative look from someone else may mean nothing more than he or she is constipated. You don't know. You can't read minds."
  • Fortune telling - Predicting a bad outcome to a situation before it has occurred. Unconsciously predicting failure will often cause failure. For example, if you say, "I know I will fail the test," then you will likely fail the test!
  • ‘Always’ or ‘never’ thinking - This is where you think in words like ‘always’, ‘never’, ‘every time’, or ‘everyone’. These over-generalizations can alter behavior. Dr. Amen tells about a friend of his who asked out an attractive woman. She turned him down. He told himself that no one would ever go out with him again. This ANT prevented him from asking out anyone else for over nine months.
  • Guilt beatings - Being overrun by thoughts of "I should have done... I'm bad because…. I must do better at… I have to…” Guilt is a lousy motivator of behavior.

Dr. Amen concludes: “ANTs can take over and infest your brain. Develop an internal ‘ANTeater’ to hunt down and devour the negative thoughts that are ruining your life.”

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Stuff for your 'smart' home
If you are building or planning to build (or retro-fit) a “smart” house, you might want to check out www.smarthome.com. There you can pick up gizmos and gadgets such as IR (infrared) control systems for your appliances and home entertainment systems, camera and surveillance systems, and remotes that control all the lights in your house. You can even pick up an automatic self-cleaning cat litter box for $299.99 (we’re not kidding about this) and a “Bark Smart” device that will electronically “correct” your dog every time he/she barks. (Note: the Bark Smart “…will even work on your neighbor’s annoying dog up to 50 feet away.” At only $59.99., how can you not order one of those?!)

NEWS YOU CAN USE
Resources to Help Plan Your Family Reunion

Family reunions are growing rapidly, according to a recent column in the Wall Street Journal. Edith Wagner, editor of Reunions magazine, estimates that 200,000 family reunions are held each year. Organizations ranging from the YMCA of the Rockies (which operates two resorts near Denver) to Walt Disney World Resort report significant increases in their family reunion business. Royal Caribbean International is even launching two new cruise ships with family suites that sleep 14. For help with your family reunion, check out www.reunionsmag.com (the web site for Reunions magazine) and www.myevent.com, which will help you set up your family reunion web site and host it for $9.95 per month. Helpful books include “Family Reunion Planning Kit for Dummies” by Cheryl Fall, “Family Reunion”, by Jennifer Crichton and “Your Family Reunion: How To Plan It, Organize It and Enjoy It,” by George G. Morgan. If you’re really clever, you can combine a family reunion with a trip to check out some retirement communities or investment property.

CHECK IT OUT
Cruises with dance camps aboard

According to a recent article in USA Today, the hit TV show “Dancing With the Stars” has provided a huge lift for adult dance camps. One dance camp owner reports that, “Registration increases every time the show airs.” There are plenty of resort-based dance camps, of course; but a really cool idea is to combine a cruise with a shipboard dance camp. Here are a few web sites where you can check out the seagoing options:
