MAKING THE MOVE
The Fannins of Jacksonville, Florida

While a lot of his clients are people who have moved to Florida from elsewhere, financial advisor Richard Fannin’s family has been in the Jacksonville area for three generations. For nearly that long, they‘ve also been heading to the mountains of North Carolina in the summers. Richard’s grandfather went to camp in North Carolina, as did Richard’s father and Richard himself. So, when Richard and his wife, Amy, began thinking about a second home, they naturally turned to a very familiar and comfortable part of the country. “I looked a little bit in New Hampshire and Vermont,” said Richard, “but that wasn’t very practical with three children and my business down in Florida. How often would we actually be able to get up there?” Richard used the Internet for most of his research on potential properties and communities in North Carolina. A self-confessed “statistics nut”, he wanted to find a place with exactly the right climate - not too cold in the winter, just right in the summer. He also wanted the location to be a reasonable drive from Jacksonville and he wanted a city nearby with a commercial airport so they could fly in if they had to.

Finally, he wanted a community which represented a good value and which had a robust rental program, so he could rent out his unit when he and his family were not using it. Haywood County, North Carolina (“the highest elevation of any county in the southeastern U.S.”), 20 miles due west of Asheville, looked good from the standpoint of climate, size and geography. Richard visited a couple of properties in Haywood County. When he saw the Maggie Valley Club, he called his wife to tell her he had found a three-bedroom condo unit in a community that was perfect for their family. Her response: “I trust you. Go for it.” He did and they love it.

CHECK IT OUT
Building a Log Home: Sturdy, Energy-Efficient and Luxurious

Log homes’ sturdiness, insulation value, ease of construction and relatively low cost have made them a popular building material for centuries. But today's log homes are a far cry from Abe Lincoln’s house. Modern building techniques make it possible to construct log homes that are luxurious as well as utilitarian. According to Eric Gibson of Heritage Log Homes in Lake Lure, North Carolina, homeowners are choosing to build log homes because of the log home “lifestyle” and the fact that owning a log home allows them to “relax, renew and reconnect.”

Unlike a traditional house, log homes are really “built” at the factory, not at the job site. Once the plans are finalized to the smallest detail, each log is milled in the factory to exact specifications. Using this factory pre-cut method of construction, there are significantly fewer contractor mistakes, no badly cut joints and no leaky windows or skylights. Literally every log is numbered and lettered, then bar-coded to make final assembly at the construction site free from errors. There is no waste and the project is not subject to delay due to material shortages or scheduling problems.

Obviously, in this scenario, the design and planning stage is critical because the owner must make almost all construction decisions prior to the factory production phase. It is not possible afterwards to change things like wall locations and beam systems. This lack of flexibility, though, has its advantages. The owner can live hundreds of miles away and know that the project will not need constant oversight, since everything has been decided and pre-determined when the house goes into production at the factory.
